Polar II is based on an older work composed in San Diego in 1996 which I revised much during 2006-07, resulting in a new work to have it’s first performance on the Dark Music Days Festival in January 21, 2007 by the Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra String Quartet. In 2010 the Formalist Quartet recorded the work during their visit to the Reykjavik Arts Festival. The work is somewhat inspired from a branch of musical modernism where the interplay of rhythm and pitch is all thoroughly organized without though being based on twelve-tone method or other serial principles. My interest was more towards keeping a certain connection with common harmonic principles although at times the dynamic character becomes more shaped by free polyphonic texture. From another standpoint the work is also a meditation on certain qualities of arctic terrains after dwelling for almost a decade in the comfort of Southern California climate. Special thanks I give to the founder and leader of the Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra, Rut Ingólfsdóttir, who made it possible for me to recompose this quartet.
